🌿 Environmental Health

Protecting our community through food safety inspections, water quality monitoring, and environmental oversight.

About Environmental Health

The Environmental Health division of the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department works to identify and control environmental factors that affect human health. Our team conducts inspections, issues permits, and educates the community on a wide range of environmental health issues.

Food Safety & Inspections

We conduct routine inspections of all licensed food establishments in our jurisdiction to ensure compliance with Nebraska food safety regulations. This includes:

  • Restaurants, cafes, and food trucks
  • Schools and childcare facility kitchens
  • Grocery stores and delis
  • Temporary food stands and events
  • Mobile food units

To report a food safety complaint or concern, call our office at (402) 375-2200 or submit a report online.

Private Well Testing

Nebraska’s rural residents often depend on private wells for drinking water. Private wells are not regulated by the EPA or state public water systems, so regular testing is the homeowner’s responsibility. We recommend testing your well water annually for:

  • Bacteria (coliform) — especially after flooding or heavy rainfall
  • Nitrates — important if you have infants or are pregnant
  • pH and hardness
  • Pesticides if you are in an agricultural area

Water test kits and sampling instructions are available at our office. Results are typically returned within 5–7 business days.
