STI Information & Prevention

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — sometimes called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) — are infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact. STIs are common and treatable. Most serious consequences can be prevented through early testing and treatment.

Common STIs

🔬

Chlamydia

Most common bacterial STI. Often has no symptoms. Curable with antibiotics. Annual screening recommended for sexually active women under 25.

🔬

Gonorrhea

Bacterial STI — can affect genitals, throat, and rectum. Increasingly antibiotic-resistant. Get tested and treated promptly.

🔬

Syphilis

Bacterial STI with multiple stages. Curable in early stages. Cases are rising — testing is important, especially in pregnancy.

💊

HIV

Manageable with modern medication (ART). People with HIV on effective treatment cannot transmit the virus (U=U). PrEP can prevent HIV.

💉

HPV

Most common STI. Can cause genital warts and certain cancers. Largely preventable with the HPV vaccine — ideally before first sexual activity.

🔬

Herpes (HSV)

Very common viral infection. No cure, but antiviral medication can manage outbreaks and reduce transmission to partners.

Prevention Strategies

Who Should Be Tested?

Everyone aged 13–64 should be tested for HIV at least once. More frequent testing is recommended for people at higher risk. For other STIs, talk with your healthcare provider about what testing is right for you.

Free and confidential testing is available. NNPHD can connect you with local testing resources and clinics. Call (402) 375-2200 for confidential assistance.
